In this review, we look closer at this sleep aid drink to see how effective it really is. We scrutinize the ingredients, potential side effects and look to see if there’s any part of it that could be improved.

SOM Sleep Ingredients: How are they?
They’re all in a proprietary blend. If you’re not aware, a proprietary blend is when a supplement manufacturer chooses to hide the individual dosages of the ingredients.
This means you don’t know how much you’re getting of each ingredient – or how effective.
There’s also only three ingredients. Some supplements make this work, but we think SOM Sleep may need a few more study-backed choices to help it perform.
Below, we look at the ingredient profile for SOM Sleep and what you need to know about the main ingredients.

L-Theanine
This is a good start to this SOM Sleep drink. L-Theanine is an amino acid which is commonly found in herbs like Green Tea.
We know Green Tea is a healthy choice, but what exactly does L-Theanine do for sleep?
It can help promote your overall levels of GABA. In short it can help to boost your overall levels of calmness and relaxation, all while reducing anxiety.
This is good for helping you to get into the right mindset when it comes to sleep. The more calm and relaxed you are, the easier it is to drift off to sleep when you’re put in a nice comfortable bed.
It doesn’t directly promote sleep, but it gets your in the right mindset set should the right circumstances appear.
GABA
This is what the L-Theanine in SOM Sleep is trying to promote. So is the real thing better than the precursor?
Yes and no. Yes, it is because this is direct GABA – which is always good for reducing anxiety and boosting your overall calmness. However, there’s also an issue with absorption.
GABA is a difficult one when it comes to crossing the blood-brain barrier – which essentially gets it working on your mindset. It’s unreliable, and if it fails to cross in SOM Sleep, you’re unlikely to see the benefits from it.
You’re better off with the L-Theanine on this one. That’s easier to absorb and still gets to work on promoting your levels of GABA.
The GABA itself in here is a risky choice as to whether or not your body will fully absorb it.
Melatonin
This is your body’s sleep hormone. Your brain releases it into your system when it’s time to to sleep form your pineal gland.
Supplementing it is a great way to help your body get to sleep as it actively promotes slumber. It’s good for better quality sleep, along with giving your a longer sleep too and helping it to happen quicker.
Our only concern with the Melatonin in SOM Sleep is that we don’t know if it is natural or not. This isn’t too much of a big deal, but it may reduce the overall effectiveness of the hormone.
Ideally, what you would want is something that contained a natural supply of the hormone. Montmorency Tart Cherry would be a good option as this contains a natural source of melatonin and can help promote your overall levels while still ensuring that you’re getting the real thing.
SOM Sleep Ingredient Summary
As you can see, there’s only three ingredients in here. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but there’s much less room for error.
We like the L-Theanine, but we think improvements could be made elsewhere with SOM Sleep.
The first problem is the proprietary blend. Without knowing how much of each ingredient you’re getting, how can you know that you’re getting a good enough dose of each ingredient?
It’s difficult. We also think that there’s a risk that the melatonin in here may not be natural. Switching it over for a more certain source of natural melatonin like Tart Cherry would be a great idea.
To get more natural melatonin it would be good to use something like L-Tryptophan. This is an amino acid that converts into Serotonin after absorption. The serotonin helps to promote your overall mood, and is converted again into melatonin which helps improve your overall levels of the sleep hormone.
We also think magnesium might help here too. It can help relax your nervous system overnight which can reduce overnight twitches and jerks. This can result in less disturbances in the night that wake you up, and longer more peaceful sleep.
It would be good to see those changes.
SOM Sleep Side Effects – Are there any?
Despite being a proprietary blend, you shouldn’t run into any side effects from drinking SOM Sleep.
All the ingredients should be safe in that low dosage blend, and we haven’t heard any reports of side effects.
If you want to be as safe as possible, we suggest speaking to your doctor before using it. This will give you enough information of whether you want to go ahead or not.
SOM Sleep Summary
After all is said and done, this is more of a novelty compared to traditional sleep aid supplements.
It’s much easier to take, but that doesn’t mean it’s more effective. There are only three ingredients and we don’t the dosages of any of them.
There are plenty which could be added to this drink to improve, and some that could be replaced.
If you really want to try it, we’re not going to tell to not buy it. You should get some benefit from the Melatonin and L-Theanine, just know that there are better options out there.
